resident Obama is planning to hand the U.S. Commerce Department authority over a forthcoming cybersecurity effort to create an Internet ID for Americans, a White House official said here today.

It's "the absolute perfect spot in the U.S. government" to centralize efforts toward creating an "identity ecosystem" for the Internet, White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt said.

The Obama administration is currently drafting what it's calling the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace, which Locke said will be released by the president in the next few months. (An early version was publicly released last summer.)

"We are not talking about a national ID card," Locke said at the Stanford event. "We are not talking about a government-controlled system. What we are talking about is enhancing online security and privacy and reducing and perhaps even eliminating the need to memorize a dozen passwords, through creation and use of more trusted digital identities."

The Commerce Department will be setting up a national program office to work on this project, Locke said.

Details about the "trusted identity" project are unusually scarce...

...Schmidt stressed today that anonymity and pseudonymity will remain possible on the Internet.

Until more details are released, it's hard to really comment one way or the other.

Not yet perhaps, but it wouldn't surprise me if the talk were to change some time down the road. We may not have details yet, but my initial reaction is not positive. It seems I've become distrustful and suspicious in this day and age.

It's tricky. We'll have to be patient and wait for the definite outcome of this.

This is the first I have heard of this but I guess I don't think too much of the plan. At this point I can still remember my various passwords and can prove my identity if I need to. I don't think I need or want the govt's help in this area as I have little faith that they can keep my secrets any better than they do their own.

There's no chance that "a centralized database will emerge,"

There's no chance that "I have any reason to believe that statement"

Oy!

I don't think I need or want the govt's help in this area as I have little faith that they can keep my secrets any better than they do their own.

No kidding! Not to mention if I'd wanted them to know "my secrets" I would have sent them a letter disclosing them. My business, as long as it's legal....is no business of theirs. Too much power to hand over to the government and way too easy a foundation for encroachment on personal freedoms.

There's no chance that "a centralized database will emerge,"

Yeah....right. Dry that line of fecal matter out and you could fertilize the lawn with it.

I wonder how long before censorship of ideas, information, etc begins on the net. Or "lists" of people who say things the government doesn't approve of are made. Big Brother is watching.

Too big a government with too much power.

Barack and Michelle's life time of resentment and contempt for America is rearing it's ugly head. 20 years in Jeremiah Wright's America hating church was the ideal environment to plan their payback to fundamentally transform America.

If its a voluntary system I might go along with it. If it's mandatory then no.

We know enugh about this plan to know it will be mandatory as with Obama care, and everything else He has put in to law with or without americans liking it,.

No Data Base, and only in the Private Sector, which is BS as the data base is alredy in place with all your infrmation in the private sector in your bank, your kids school, your doctor and with Social Security,or any other Private Sector agency, contorled by the Big Brother in the Oval Office.

As I read on another site ; This will only be used to track you and all of your internet travels and comments, especially the ones you may make about Big Brother and his outlaw minions who still can't believe they made a mistake when they voted in 2008.

Also I see some need more information, but want to wait until it is put into effect as did Pelosi when she said almost the same thing,Let's vote and pass it so we can see what's in it in regard to Obamacare which was and has been forced on the American people with no option to buy or not buy health insurance.

OOPs I forgot there is an option to that statement on health care, and it is either you buy sucker or pay a big a$$ fine or the loss everything, your family, home and your freedom, and every other right you haven't lost up to this point in time by going to jail.

Now I don't care about what others may or may think about my views, due to the fact that I got to be this old,(almost 69 years old), by myself without having some one brow weat me in to their view, thinking or acceptence of what is happening now and have quit friendships due to name calling and labels because I did not agree with them or Obama and all have been DemoRats and some Republicans as well.

And I only approve of laws and the minority of those in Washington Like Gabby who truly believe and support Americans and America, and work for US as true representative of the people.

Let me say this and I will shut up and let my statement speak for my stand on this underhanded plan of Obama's for more control of our lives, and I agree that these people in the White House have had enough time to plan our down fall with 'MALICE and AFORE THOUGHT' as they say in our Justice system, To cause great harm to America.

As the man said "Give Liberty, or Give Me Death" !

And folks it may come to what Jefferson said about "Tranny In Government",and why the 2nd Amendment was, and is of such import today as it was at the begining of this country of America.

In case the glaring lack of control created by dubya & crew created by dereg of the banking industry & other endeavors which lead to the wall street debacle & CC interest rates about which you all bitch, not to mention the great real estate bust, has escaped your notice.......... some regulation, which protects you from yourself is likely justified. what are you really afraid of?
