Which movie can you watch over and over again?

Yes, I am a movie lover. Movie fanatic maybe if I think about the amount of movies I've seen. Some were turned off before the end, some were not to be remembered, some were pretty good, some were really good and some were just outstanding.

Recently I took a look at AFI's list of the best 100 movies ever made in America and I was surprised that some movies I thought would be in the top ten were not even on the list or way lower ranked. In fact, I haven't seen number one and two on the list once. Maybe I should.

There are some movies I have watched over and over again because, in my opinion they are so outstanding that they deserve to be watched more than one time. I will make an exception for " Memento". That one I watched twice to make sure I understood what I just saw.

Movies I saw at least twice or more are the Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, The Green Mile, Trainspotting, Reservoir Dogs, Silence of the Lambs, American Beauty, Mystic River and Once Upon a time in the West just to name a few I that are on top of my mind.

Which movies or movies did you watch more than once or could you watch more than one time?

"The General" starring Buster Keaton is near the top of the AFI list at #18, There is a new version available called "Many Masterpieces Become One" subtitled "The General" with music by Scott Joplin.

If you like ragtime, and I do, this is the most enjoyable silent movie I've ever seen.

Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Gods Must be Crazy, North by Northwest, The Tempest, It's a Wonderful Life, Sandlot...just off the top of my head. I'm sure there's a few more.

Once I've seen a flick, that's it - but certain outstanding ones I can watch every few years.

(This doesn't include the children's movies I've had to watch a zillion times)

"The Way of the Gun" (2000) in which Benicio del Toro has a speaking part (as opposed to "The Usual Suspects" where he's brilliantly unintelligible). And "Snatch" where Guy Ritchie uses his wife's limitless resources to push the state-of-the-art in "Pulp Fiction" genre film with a nice UK twist*. (Where Brad Pitt is a "pikey" middleweight with marvelous restorative capacity, wizardly pugilistic skillls and a pronounced speech-related challenges, i. e. utterly undecipherable lines replete with awkward pauses, blank stares, angry puzzlement and conspiratorial, whispered translations.)

*subtle plot points, heavy characterization coupled with gruesome violence untainted by special-effects. . .

"The Way of the Gun" (2000)

I hated this movie. Interesting style choices and very well detailed, realistic action scenes but the movie couldn't decide at first if the main characters are clever drifters on the edge of society or well trained, ruthless criminal muscle. Then it couldn't decide who was the bad guy and/or good guy was. Went for edgy, landed on confused.

Waste of a great opportunity, if you ask me.

You point to exactly the triumph of movie and characterization as seen from from my perspective. As their hasty plan deteriorates (and the relentless opposition counters), these "drifters" dredged up one improvisation after another until the climax when a surprising array of resources materializes in both camps - all bad guys whose moral compasses were dysfunctional to varying degrees. . .

The "Sixth Sense" and "Body Heat."

I particulary liked the scene in Body Heat where he was jogging, all hot and sweaty, stops on the pier or boardwalk trying to catch his breath and lights up a cigarette! Priceless.

One of my all-time favorites is "for Love of the Game" It's:

              1. A baseball movie

              2. Kevin Costner is in it

              3. It's a Kevin Costner Baseball movie

              4. I thoroughly enjoy the agony of the 'decision' played out through the game.

              5. Did I mention it's a baseball movie with Kevin Costner in it? :-)

I'm also a big fan of 'The American President' and the A&E series of 'Horatio Horblower' movies. I enjoyed C.S. Forrester's books as a kid. The Russell Crowe 'Master and Commander' is only a pale shadow of Horatio Hornblower.

No, was just a wild guess ;-)

The Blues Brothers. Probably the best movie to come from a SNL bit.

As mentioned a couple of times on this thread. Totally agreed snarky68. Thanks for stopping by.

Wow the AFI list seemed a bit pretentious. Really heavy on older films with only 13 coming from the last 30 years. How is that possible when so many great advancements to film have come from American film makers in the last 30 years.

War movies how is Platoon not higher on the list and Full Metal Jacket not even included, both really important films. And ROCKY is listed ahead of Deer Hunter please!

Comedies How was MASH only #56 a very important American cultural moment and insanely funny film. Then Steel Magnolias and Forrest Gump do not even make the list both extremely important American films. I thought Naming Gone with the Wind #4 was awful. It has been exposed as complete revisionist history. Lending credence to the the Moon Light and Magnolias BS fed to the country by those in favor of sustaining an Apartheid system in the South. Naming that film as #4 and leaving out Steel Magnolias completely was wrong and a complete insult to real Americana.

As for films I watch over and over, The Holy Grail will never get old!

For the Christmas season it is BAD SANTA, The Santa Clause and A Christmas Story! It's a wonderful Life is one of the worst Christmas movies ever made if you ask me, I just wanted the guy to jump and get it over with!

War movies you have they covered WWI and some of WWII but they really did not do justice to the Vietnam films of which I think Full Metal Jacket was the most powerful and never gets old.

Sci-Fi films I have to go with recent films like Avatar and then the entire Star Wars series is awesome! How does a film like Avatar with all of the new tech stuff not grab a spot in the top 100!

Popular Comedy adventure films like the Boon Dock Saints, Snatch, Oceans 11-13, any thing by Jackie Chan have become great at combining action with comedy a wonderful new genre.

Any how it seems like the voters were a little heavy on the 70 and older crowd or just don't see to many new films!

Hey, spg64. Just like you I was surprised to see a lot of, in my opinion masterpieces not on AFI's list. Censored maybe? Good you mentioned Jackie Chan, always a pleasure to watch the man :-) Thank you for your comment.

Bull Durham. Not just a baseball movie, but the very first time I ever started looking at women older than me in quite that light. No one says 'Oh my' quite like Susan Sarandon.......

Wow! I love a lot, I mean, a lot of these movies! Ya, Jacob's Ladder was freaky and I loved it! I agree with many of the people's choices here, like American History X (awesome, but depressin too), Once Upon a Time in the West (loved that harmonica scene in the bar, full of suspense), a lot of these movies here are ones that make me want to rush out and buy pronto! However, I'm a bit suprised there was a movie left out, I may have missed it somewhere but pretty much nobody mentions it..."...The matrix has you..." Come on! How can the Matrix NOT be included??? That movie's so bad ass I've seen it more times than I can count. Oh wait, and Unforgiven and Pale Rider and Gone Baby Gone (true, only saw it two times but still a decent movie), Katherine Bigelow's "PointBreak" and "the Hurt Locker"...pretty sure I missed others but you guys have already covered the best of the best out there! Kinda liked Stephen King's "the Mist" although I wouldn't rank it as one of the top best out there, but I have seen it more than once. Also, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, ohhh, ya! John Woo kicks ass..oh that reminds me, Face/Off too! I KNOW I'm missing some more but u guys, I could kiss you! I'm going to write a list of most of these movies so I can buy them! I mean, "A Christmas Story"?!? Yeah! I haven't thought about that one in SOOO long! Good times... And Yojimbo was cool! Also A Fistful of Dollars.

Wanted to mention one more movie, this one really affected me powerfully when I was younger, although I'm sure not too many people have seen it, I picked up the book after watching the movie and just haven't been able to live without a copy of the book ever since. "The Power of One", with Morgan Freeman and a young Stephen Dorff. Very very good movie...
"Shogun" wasn't too bad either, although a little disappointing when compared to the book, as well as "Hawaii"...

LOL @ the name. You should watch it. (smile). The movie was superb. Co-starring Harrison Ford and Annette Benning played his wife. EXCELLENT.

Regarding Henry is a 1991 American romance drama film directed by Mike Nichols. The screenplay by J. J. Abrams focuses on a New York City lawyer who struggles to regain his memory and recover his speech and mobility after he survives a shooting.

Speaking of cheesy B flicks, The Queen of Outer Space is an hilarously good bad movie - especially if you're in an..um..altered state. It's a 1950s sci-fi yarn starring Zha Zha Gabor about an earth astronaut crew that crash lands on a planet run by women.

And of course, there's Plan 9 from Outer Space, maybe the best bad movie of all time.

I have a very short attention span and generally do not watch movies. That being said, I have watched Young Frankenstein over 100 times and will watch it whenever I can. I know most of the dialogue and still find this hilarious! Gene Wilder, Terri Garr and Madeline Kahn, Cloris Leachman, Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman - what a cast of characters!

Yep, Young Frankenstein was excellent for laughing one's head off. I loved E.T. and Close Encounters. I've watched Forrest Gump several times, and always like it. One of my very favorites (oldie and SUCH a Goodie) White Christmas! It was the one that got me interested in Dance as a career, (I took dance for 10 years, taught it for 8, but not a career). It was such a heart wrencher when the snow came and saved the Veteran's resort business. Of course anyone in the 70's culture got a huge kick out of the Blues Brothers!! LOL I even had the album.

When Young "Fronkensteen" was first released (in the pre-cable, pre-video age), I knew a guy who was an usher at a movie theater, and he'd let us in through the side door every night - so I must have seen that movie over 20 times. I even bought the movie soundtrack vinyl LP.

You'll probably find this disturbing. I saw the first Star Wars movie (Episode IV) five times in the theater the summer it came out. I've seen lots of movies dozens of times on cable/video, and have quite the DVD collection. But the record is the first LOTR movie, "Fellowship of the Ring." I've watched it over 130 times - just LOVE the panoramic views. That's probably the most I've seen any movie. Guess I like scifi/fantasy type movies.

Well, I don't have all afternoon to list all of movies that I have watched more than once but topping the list has to be A Christmas Story (at LEAST a couple of dozen times), Monty Python and The Holy Grail (over a dozen views), The Life of Brian (ditto), Saving Private Ryan (ditto), Planes, Trains and Automobiles (ditto), and The Lord of The Rings Trilogy and Indiana Jones series(at least a half dozen times each). I like alot of the movies on your list too, henry :)

I find certain movies that I grew up with I can watch over and over again probably more because they represent romantacized elements of my childhoold than they are truly outstanding pieces of cinema. Some of these include Goonies, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Star Trek II, The Great Muppet Caper, and Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. I had them all on VHS as a kid, and every time I stick them in the DVD player now I'm reminded of curling up on the couch by the fireplace and watching them on the ancient Magnavox with the tinfoil wrapped rabbit ears that required needle nosed pliars to change channels.

More in the category of movies that mean something to me now that I can watch repeatedly I'd list A River Runs Through It, The Big Lebowski, The Shawshank Redemption, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and a handful of others.

Steel Magnolias is a movie that truly captures the south. Not like most of the movies that Hollywood likes to put out about Southerners. Those ladies are real southern belles.

I loved steel magnolias and Shirley McLains character Weeza. All the characters were perfect.

Other good ones are Silence of the Lambs, the Green Mile, The Notebook, Wizard of Oz and my kids must have watched Rocket Man a million times. They thought it was so funny when the guy was on Mars hooked to his commander through an oxygen hose and passed gas. Then tried to say it wasn't him.

yep, I forgot to list 'The Wizard of OZ'......... did you know that Greg Macguire has written a trilogy of books based on OZ characters? the first one is called 'Wicked, the life and times of the wicked witch of the west' It is quite interesting and written from the witch's point of view...

                    henry,

                    GOOD movies I watch repeatedly:

                    • Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet. I'm a sucker for Branagh and Shakespeare, and (unlike most live versions) Branagh does the complete 4+ hours in this film version
                    • Amadeus
                    • Patton
                    • Cast Away

                    GUILTY PLEASURES:

                    • Contact
                    • Radio Days (Woody Allen)
                    • Indiana Jones 1, 3 and 4

And for some reason I can't figure out:

                    • That Thing You Do (Tom Hanks). Probably just reminds me of being much younger. And I love all things Tom Hanks, except movies he made with Meg Ryan.

mther: Memento was great - that's my daughter's all-time favorite.

Darn - someone mentioned Monty Python.

Life of Brian is our family Christmas movie - we watch it every year (along with A Christmas Story)!

                    GOOD movies:

                    • Here -
                      • With you wrt Branagh (especially Henry V)
                      • Amadeus, too
                      • Yep, Patton
                      • Adding Casablanca, African Queen (and many of the Bogart movies)
                    • There -
                      • Swept Away (and other Giannini/Wertmuller films)
                      • Rashomon, Seven Samurai (and other Mifune/Kurosawa films)

                    GUILTY PLEASURES:

                    • Indiana Jones - yep, but 1-3 (haven't seen 4)
                    • Top Gun
                    • Holiday films -
                      • A Christmas Carol
                      • A Wonderful Life
                      • Love, Actually
                    • My 'feminine' side (I'm a sensitive guy) -
                      • Under the Tuscan Sun (I think I could watch 2 hours of Diane Lane simply eating breakfast)
                    • The 'kid' in me -
                      • Shrek series (and many Dreamworks films)
                      • The Incredibles (and many Pixar films)
                      • Monty Python films

TV Mini-series I'll count as 'movies':

                    • Pride & Prejudice (BBC version)
                    • Shogun

There are many, many more - but these are the main ones.

My favorite thing about Bogart detective movies, and Hitchcock movies is the tiny moments of comedy they toss in. Even in Psycho the crazy guy pushes the car into the lake to hide it. It sinks about a foot then stops. The camera goes back to his face and he has this look of confusion, like "Hey, that's not supposed to happen". The car resumes sinking and he goes back to crazy. Love that stuff. Maltese Falcon has some great stuff between Bogart and Peter Lorrie.

I forgot Big Jake until I saw Sherry's comment. I watch it at least once a month usually.

I normally don't like really graphically violent movies, but there is something about "From Dusk to Dawn".... watching the reactions or sometimes lack of reaction of the "bad" people to the vampires never fails to make me laugh. In places, this is one of the funniest movies that I have ever seen.

In Bruges with Colin Farrell was very funny and I didn't expect that at all. I can recommend that one if you haven't seen it already.

Thank you for mentioning Tombstone. It is one of my favorite movies of all time.

Val Kilmer makes that movie for me. I can just associate with his style and sarcasm.

I own 3 copies of Tombstone....the last one is blu-ray....so I would have to say that Tombstone would definitely have to rank in my top 5 movies of all time. LOL!

I love watching Sam Elliott in westerns...but I agree with you - Val Kilmer flat out made that movie for me.

Another western that I love....but haven't seen lately is "Silverado".

I have quite a few I could watch again & again (and I do).

                              Shawshank Redemption

                              The Green Mile

These are just a few. I love watching movies.

I do love Silence of the Lambs. Oh, another one just popped into my head that I watch whenever I see it on the movie channels. Girl, Interrupted. Every time I watch it my son will walk in the room look at the TV and say "really???!!!" and then walk back out shaking his head.

Another heart wrenching, but ironically funny movie... Angelina Jolie performed well in that movie for sure, but I'm thinking that her mind was that mucked up as a teen.

I'm guessing he meant "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" with Johnny Depp.

Though I think doing drugs while watching that would be redundant.

I heard Depp signed on to do the Rum Diaries. I always love me some Gonzo.

"We can't stop here...this is bat country."

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is definitely a guilty pleasure when I'm in the mood for something psychedelic.

I'm guessing he meant "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" with Johnny Depp.

Yep, got mixed up there. At least I got the Vegas part right ;-)

...and this all reminds me to re-watch "Where the Buffalo Roam" with Bill Murray playing Thompson and Peter Boyle playing Oscar Acosta. I vaguely recall really liking the film but it was the early 80's and many of memories from that era are vague...

If I'm in a cheap room with drugs and booze, my repeat pics would be "Bar Fly" and "Payback," and "Taxi Driver." Otherwise, it's any Terry Gilliam film, but especially "The FisherKing."

Great promising actor back then although Judd never made it like other promising actors of his time. Saw him in two and a half men as well. Somehow I see him and Charlie Sheen partying quite well together :-)

I often wondered what happened to him. I have seen him in a couple of bad movies (one made by SyFy) but wondered why his career didn't take off like Emilio's. He was good looking. Same thing with the guy that played the lead in Sixteen Candles.

There was a whole load of the brat pack that didn't make the transition though - think Pretty in Pink, Weird Science etc....can't even remember half the names now when at the time I thought they were the bees knees!
