Put a Seed Newsvine link on your own site

Guideline for how to become a happy and decent Newsvine Member. The twenty steps.

A short and brief guideline for those who just joined Newsvine and for those who still haven't figured it out. If you will follow the rules below I can assure you that your time on Newsvine will be very pleasant.

Here we go :

1. Respect those who have more Vines than you do. Let them guide you but don't drag you.

2. Choose a screen-name that doesn't represent your ideologies.

3. Write only articles or seed only links which really have your interest. Don't write or seed just to have content.

4. Don't accept friendship requests without glimpsing at that person's page. That way your friend's list will be one without any bias.

5. Don't get mixed up in name calling. Just log off, take a walk and laugh about it.

6. If you receive personal mail through Newsvine think twice before you respond. Don't forget, it's not mandatory.

7. Stay away from issues that are none of your business. The less you know the better you're off.

8. Make sure you respect the Code of Honor.

9. Only copy materials to groups that are suited for that group.

10. Take at least two days a week a break from Newsvine. You will profit from it.

11. Avoid group forming. It leads to nowhere.

12. Don't write more than two articles a week. Too much at the same time will have an opposite effect. Same for seeding links.

13. Decide what your purpose is on Newsvine. If it's sharing ideas and knowledge gadgets like the leader board are a waste of time. If your goal is to be one the leader board it's a handy tool.

14. Don't expect anything when it comes to earnings. You write or seed here because you're passionate about it and if you're rewarded with a little bit of pocket change it's a bonus.

14. Be yourself, no matter what they say.

15. Don't use words or phrases you normally never would use.

16. Don't worry if your articles are not being noticed immediately. It's a big place here and it takes a while before your stuff will be picked up. Make sure you tag your articles in a decent way.

17. At the end of the day you could vote for some people that always vote your articles up. It's like returning a favor and part of the process of getting more attention through your work. Don't vote randomly though.

18. As long as you're capable to decipher reality from Newsvine you're good.

19. Make sure your comments are not longer than the article itself. Other people lose interest while going through the comments.

20. Stealing from one person is plagiarism but stealing from many is doing research......( sarcastic). Which leads me to tell you to make sure you use emoticons to express the way you meant something.

Enjoy your time and hopefully I was able to guide you off to a good start.

      Use my real name?

No, not that one. There are a lot of angry climate deniers out there. I'm best off staying anonymous.

But using a name that reminds me of my profession helps in maintaining an objective tone.

It's not that I think it's wrong to stay anonymous and therefore use a screen-name you like. Nothing wrong with that. But study has shown that people will and can judge you already by a screen name if it's something theu oppose. Unfortunately that is.

Susi was my dog's name but I did use it on a PETA investigation for ICPO. I use Gail now as it is easy to forget being only for letters. It's so easy even I forget. I did have it tattood on my memory but the KGB thought it was code for The Weather Channel. They implanted direct access to the internet but only one site is available. I should stop. I hear goose steps. Or a cat.

Welcome back Henry! You've created a good list here.

I think some of the people who got completely burned out on Newsvine were the ones who insisted on being on here all the time. I take breaks away from it pretty regularly. I also, for the sake of my own mental health, avoid most of the political articles. There is nothing to be gained from bashing heads with someone whose opinion will not change no matter what you say. You'll notice that in the political threads NOBODY ever says, "Yeah, you're actually correct on that point. Thanks for the information. I learned something."

I've been here two years, and try to adhere to your enumerations for the most part. The only one I take issue with, a little, is number four.

I don't use the column to make my decisions (and I 'try' not to judge others by their page or the names on their list. The list is supposed to represent a 'reading list' not a representation of character values or people we would necessarily want to know in real life - but they could be --just not a requirement for me to have them on my list. I appreciate good writers and interesting articles - no matter who writes them.)

I like to know a little more about people. Not what they like on their hamburger or favorite position from the Kama Sutra. I just like to see maybe their book list or fav music, what they've written or some comments. The groups they belong to gives a good idea of the persons concerns. I friended a guy, put him on ignore because he's an ass, but open his comments on one topic where he is tender and real. If I had looked at his page, I would have know he was an ass.
