Schoolchildren are more likely to be bullied if they are overweight, and a new study suggests just how much more likely: 60 percent more, if they are obese (with a body mass index in the 95th percentile for children in their age group), and 13 percent more, if they are simply overweight (85th percentile or higher).

To their surprise, they found that none of those factors mattered. It made no difference whether the child was rich or poor; male or female; white, black or Hispanic; or living in a community where many other children were obese. Nor did it matter if the child had good social skills or did well in school

It would be nice if this would encourage more parents not to let their kids get fat, by not keeping a lot of unhealthy snacks and sodas around, doing active things as a family, etc. Although if the risk of diabetes and other major health issues hasn't done that yet, I'm not sure this will. Maybe it will also encourage parents to talk to their kids about not bullying people because of their weight (or really, for any other reason).

Treat others like you want to be treated.

Siblings of "fat" kids get picked on too for being "fat" even when they aren't. For some reason kids see the overweight kids as being easier targets and I just can't quite figure out why. It would be nice to hear from adults who were the bullies as kids and get their perspective on why they picked on who they picked on. Does it really all just boil down to "because they're different" or is something else going on?

I think children who are overweight are consider not to fit in somehow.......
It is sad that any kids get bullied. My kids go to a school has what is called the No Bullying Zone. Kids are supposed to be able to report bullying anonymously and it will be dealt with. This however, does not always stop bullying and kids picking on other kids. My son has been picked on and bullied b/c of how he looks. He is a very popular and smart kid (and hansome if I do say so myself...lol), he's just thin and wears glasses so bullies see him as a prime target :/
