Coffee: Is it healthier than you think?

But for years, coffee had a bad reputation. Linked in many people's minds with smoking, coffee is associated with over-caffeination and insomnia.

The caffeine found in coffee can stay in your system for up to 12 hours, making it more difficult to fall asleep, and it affects your quality of sleep as well. Caffeine is also a diuretic, meaning that it increases urine output, which can lead to dehydration.

The general consensus used to be that tea was the better bet in terms of health benefits. But recent research suggests that despite the downsides of coffee, the "devil's brew" does have an upside: Coffee drinkers may be at lower risk of liver and colon cancer, type 2 diabetes, and Parkinson's disease.

I'm very healthy :-)

I'm coffee addicted. I've been drinking coffee since I was a kid. 3-5 cups a day most every day, on cold days even more.

I'm a morning coffee person and have been since I was 13 or so. And I like it black, no sugar or milk to spoil it except on the rare cases I get a particularly bad brew that must be covered up.

One of my future plans is to invest in a roster and grinder to make better coffee for home. Then I hope to secure a supply of green Kona beans, there is a Newsvine user that's a farmer I'll try and look up again, and go at it. I'm curious if any of the benefits are harmed by roasting the bean to death like so many people do.

I enjoy coffee in every form, from latte, to black, to with a little Coffemate with a flavor, to chocolate covered espresso beans.

My usual brew is French press, my drip machine died over a year ago and I haven't had reason to replace it. Press coffee doesn't take any more time, just a tiny bit more work in the morning and it is worth it. I have heard that press coffee is slightly worse for a person, something about certain things not filtering and raising cholesterol.

Oh, well :)

I have one of those presses as well. But, I haven't heard that they don't filter as well. But hey, if we eliminated all that was BAD for us, what fun would that be, yea?

Can't disagree with that! I try to eat a lowfat, low cholesterol diet anyway, so maybe the press coffee is helping.

The best coffee is from a vacuum pot, it's a cool science-lab looking device with two chambers. Grounds on top, water on bottom with a tube the water goes up to mix with the grounds before returning to the lower chamber. Great coffee, but time consuming. I have a vacuum pot but only bring it out when friends come by.

Bodum made an electric version (mine is glass, another reason I don't use it often) that I have always wanted.

I just use a regular coffee-maker but always make sure I have my Dutch coffee at home :-) I drink at least six " medium" cups a day. The " Senseo" was a big hit in Europe but I haven't seen one yet here in America. Does it ring any bells with you guys?

Is that one of those that uses the coffee pods? I have used those in the past, but the coffee was only so-so as I don't think it spends enough time going through the grounds (if that makes sense). In fact, the hotel I stayed at this weekend had a small version of that.

It just seems that coffee brewing multiple cups has more chance to brew through the grounds.

Yep, it is. The pods are pretty expensive. In Europe it was and still is a big hype. Although people started complaining about the pods' prices. Then other manufacturers got the right to develop pods and a new market was born. It started out with coffee and now you have them also for tea.

I like the idea, but the machines I have used haven't made the best coffee. But then, I use a press and it is tough to compete with that! :)

They're very quick, handy and especially when you just want one cup of coffee.

Coffee helps open up my sinuses and is good as an extra diuretic. It keeps my blood pressure down.

The teeth staining is bad and it can aggravate ulcers though....

There is a cure for that, it's called Crest White Strips....

There's also teeth whitening with the dentist, but I don't have that problem, but others do.

I thought it kept mine up. Do you like regular coffee Lilith or do you have a certain preference? I'm drinking coffee as we speak. A morning without coffee is like sleep :-)

I can't drink Espresso. It's has to be instant coffee and that's Nescafé.

Espresso is a little bit too strong for me. I favor a good Cappuccino.

I didn't start drinking coffee until college. My rommate got me hooked on it. We just had a little hotpot and drank instant. Yuck..but beggars can't be choosers. Over the years my taste has changed. When I was a novice, I had to load up with sugar and cream. Now i only use cream , can't stand it with sugar. I also used to be an all day drinker but I quit that. Just my 2 or 3 morning cups and I'm good to go. I think coffee is good for you in moderation like a lot of things.

That's a good thing. I drank it black for a while but nowadays I'm back to sugar and cream.

I've been drinking coffee since I was 14. During grammar school and university I noticed that I needed my daily dose of caffeine, it still helps me concentrate on complex intellectual work. Being addicted to caffeine is not a bad thing all (think of anti-Alzheimer effect), and sometimes a totally contradictory issue occurs, meaning that you can even sleep although you had a big cup of coffee in the afternoon or in the evening. Not more than 4 big cups a day is OK, two cups in the morning is a must for me.

Once in a while I take milk and sugar but mostly I drink plain black coffee. Concerning the diuretic issue - as long as you have regular intake of at least 2 liters (0,53 gallons) of 'mineral' water or juices the chance of getting dehydrated is very slim.
