A large study has found that people who as children or adolescents lost a parent to suicide are more likely to die the same way. The research will be published in the May issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

"It appears from our results that all factors -- developmental, environmental and genetic -- are important," said lead author Holly Wilcox of Johns Hopkins Children's Center.

Well depression is inherited that is for sure. I'd bet the study is on target.

It is Linda? I had no idea to be honest. If so, then it's most likely this study is on target indeed.

thinning of the brain's cortex in the right hemisphere appeared to be linked to inherited or the familial form of depression.

    Here is a study.

It makes sense that these tendencies may be inherited. There is also the very strong subconcious drive to emulate one's iconic role model, even if to be close to them is destrucive. A perversion of a drive meant to be protective.

This is an old piece of news. For those of us who have worked in psychiatry, we have known this for years.

So you are an RN. You say you've worked in a trauma center for years. What training to you have in psychiatric care? You say you've been chronically depressed as well. Instead of making a glib comment, maybe some insight. Or do you just like to blow smoke?

I worked in mental health (RN) for over a decade. This has been well known for ages. However, in the past there has been little empiracal data for what we all "knew". I am currently in a position where I am gathering data that is sent to local, state and federal levels that is actually confirming these beliefs.

Yes, if you have a relative who suicides, you are at much higher risk, just as for other medical issues. And first degree relatives (parents, siblings) dramatically increase the risk.
